thursday, august 1 4:03:08 PM posted by Blake Stuchin on page 437 of my unwritten novel, i will introduce Carl the Cabbie. carl is an old-style new york cab driver, who gets angry at you if you ask him to take you somewhere close. "73rd and 5th?" he'll say. "that's barely 10 blocks from here. you should walk." carl gets really upset if you hail him in the wrong direction, like if he picks you up on the downtown side of the street when you want to go uptown. carl hates the airport and hotel business, too, because any good cabbie knows that the real money is in the streets. only lazy cabbies would be content to park the cab somewhere and just wait for the passengers to come to them. # Comments [] 4:50:48 PM posted by Blake Stuchin the last porn shop on west 42nd street has finally closed. between losing hmv 86th at the beginning of the month and now this, i feel like i've lost part of my childhood. and i'm not talking about the zach-and-kelly-getting-married kind of losing childhood. # Comments [] wednesday, july 31 4:05:34 PM posted by Blake Stuchin i always get colds in the summer and i hate it. people are always like "how do you get a cold in the summer" and none of the 4,000 snappy responses i've crafted specifically to answer that question appear to be even the slightest bit witty. much more importantly it sucks. it's 3:45 and i haven't been out all day. i swear i have labor pains and i'm coughing like brett somers circa 1991. gonna try to go see road to perdition tonight but it will all depend on how well i stomach my food. at least being home in the middle of the day enabled me to enjoy another wonderful episode of Bob Ross' Joy of Painting, where there are no mistakes, only happy accidents. # Comments [] 4:15:21 PM posted by Blake Stuchin there are people in china having tongue operations to improve their english pronounciation. i'll refrain from making a snide remark, i'm rendered speechless from the pure oddity of this news. # Comments [] tuesday, july 30 3:03:44 PM posted by Blake Stuchin finally went to vassar for the first time today and poughkeepsie was jumpin like Iverson dodgin' charges. it's a beautiful campus, and i am now really looking forward to my upcoming semester there. there is, however, the remaining problem of housing. i am still homeless and have no idea where i'm gonna live next fall, so hopefully we'll figure something out soon or else this whole thing might fall through completely. this oughta be interesting... # Comments [] 3:11:01 PM posted by Blake Stuchin i got the complete Led Zeppelin Box Set (1990, Atlantic Records) last night for $16 at Joe's on St. Mark's. this is perhaps the best thing i've bought since tivo. # Comments [] 4:52:54 PM posted by Blake Stuchin from the mad-genius pile... some guy has written a version of VNC (remote access software) that enables VNC to be used on "really small embedded 8-bit microcontrollers commonly found in" basic household appliances. This effectively means you can now remote access your toaster, bringing us all one step closer to my Orwellian fantasy, the interactive stovetop ("Hello Blake, how would you like your eggs done?"). Of course, this also means that seemingly grounded products like a blender might now be succeptible to port scanning just like any regular internet-connected computer, but i mean, c'mon, how funny would it be if i hacked keshav's oven and burnt his steak? # Comments [] sunday, july 28 11:16:42 AM posted by Blake Stuchin another sunday morning, another appreciation of a fantastic summer weekend. rob got in from nc on friday and, along with justin, the three of us had a great time relaxing at the beach on friday and saturday. jpatt and i threw frisbees on the beach while rob oogled the girls, and talked about how different his life in the south is (what a surprise). last night we went downtown to The Knitting Factory to see the much-anticipated Simon and the Salamanders (a.k.a. simon, adam and ben), which was fantastic. after the show, i went to congratulate sylvia and said "this was the highlight of my month." sylvia, always the sharpest wit, replied instantly: "oh dear. you must've had a terrible month." # Comments [] |
