Out of the 20 people in the 5th floor of Van Pelt right now, 7 of them (all girls) are wearing sweatshirts adorned with the names of institutions that they do not attend. For what it's worth, all of these apparently hip items sport the names of other strong academic institutions: Cal Berkeley, Harvard, Michigan... to name a few. So I suppose that at least we should appreciate the fact that a place's academic prestige has somehow become "cool." I wonder if these girls made the choice to wear licensed university gear as their "study clothes" because it will inspire them in some strange "superstitious athlete"-type way. And more laughably, does this mean that somewhere at other fine schools, students are sitting in their libraries donning blue and red Penn sweatshirts? somewhat ironical postscript: as i crassly mock sorority girls for their library fashion sense, i am wearing no less than a bright green "Ithaca is Gorges" t-shirt, purchased on my last visit to Cornell University. sardonic second postscript: as to my theory, cornell is known to be a much more rigorous school academically than penn, but my shirt has in no way inspired my work. it has, instead, sparked a digression in my head which lead to a wasted 15 minutes of otherwise perfectly good studytime. in case you were interested... # Comments [] |
