Facebook images now on blog

Tuesday, May 6th, 2008

I added a set of random images in the right sidebar. Because Facebook doesn’t offer users the ability to publish openly accessible RSS feeds of photos (booooo!), I had to do a bit of a hack job to make this work. All images were downloaded from my profile using FaceDown. I could have just re-uploaded them to WordPress right then using the new image uploader, but to be more efficient (I was importing around 150 photos), I uploaded a zip file to my server, unzipped the file in Putty, then brought the images into the Media Library using a handy WP importer plugin called Add from Server. The images themselves are then displayed with the sidebar widget in NextGen Gallery. And yes, I’m aware that this entire post was only interesting to about 7 people in the world, none of whom read this blog.

Twit softly and carry a big stick

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Coincidentally timed perfectly with this fascinating piece on Friendfeed in today’s NYT, I’ve removed the Twitter Updates from my daily blog posts. As I somewhat expected would eventually happen, my spotty update schedule quickly turned this blog from a once open chronicling of my ridiculous ideas, unorthodox approaches and absurd philosophies, into a full-on Twitter Dump. My twits are still visible on the sidebar, as well as on Facebook, Tumblr, and pretty much anywhere else you try to find me online, but for now we’re back to normal blog posts for awhile.

In other news, I either just saw Amanda Overmyer or a really tiny version of Amanda Overmyer on the 6 train.

The more things change

History of My Blog Sadly, this reflects the state of my blog perfectly. Going back further, the 1999 version of my blog (and by that I mean manually coded html pages because modern CMS products didn’t exist) might say HomeSite! Perl! CSS! cgi-bin! By 2002, I’d be chirping College! College! College! The Blogger is Dead. Long Live the Blogger!

i’m pretty sure gossip girl uses wordpress.

her blog’s heavy on rich media, sports nearly 100% RSS saturation (producing more vibrations on freshmen girls than a swiffer), and updates with the efficiency of a twitter addict at CES. Or Davos. and thank you faux Lycée Français for the open wi-fi that she’s tapping in to in order to fire off in-class updates. it’s a pretty robust platform, and yet totally possible. you don’t even need ues-level spending to build it.

so if gg can be moderately legit with their IT, why is it so hard to keep it real with the nyc? come on disembodied voice of kristen bell, why is your team shooting in cooper square and pretending like you’re next to a high school that’s clearly on 93rd between Park and Madison? it’s not like you don’t know better, gossip girl - you sent chuck to butai and referenced sake at decibel in the same episode. (at least you had the decency to keep your namechecks subtle; i’m running out of places in my neighborhood that i still like.) i’d dance on the nuances further, but i’ll leave the heavy lifting and further nyc private school love to nymag. xoxo, b.

Updates coming

New year, new look to the blog. I’m working on some updates to the site itself, mostly to better delineate the blog posts from the secondary material in the columns. Bear with me as I sort these out slowly.
